Darby Middlebrook and Josh Anderson of the Watauga High men's and women's cross country teams were the only top-ten runners on Saturday at the Wendy's Invitational at the McAlpine Greenway Park in Charlotte. Middlebrook, who

is aiming her sights on her second state championship in Class 4A in three years, finished second in 17:54 in the women's invitational race. She finished seven seconds behind Laura Miller of J.L. Mann, who won the race in 17:47. Team-wise, the WHS women finished sixth with 245 points.
Carborro won the meet with 104 points; T.C. Roberson finished second with 162 points. Kathleen Mansure of the Pioneers was 27th in 19:25. Sidney Wiswell of WHS finished 23rd in the women's Junior/Senior race in 22:43
On the men's side, Anderson finished tenth in 15L54 in the men's invitational race. Bryan Brackney was 41st (16:42). Bakri Abushcook of Cary won the race in 15:05. Chapel Hill won the meet with a team score of 74. Cary finished a distant second with 104 points. WHS finished fifth with 239 points.r
Luke Johnson turned in an eighth-place finish in the men's Junior/Senior Race (17:41); Zack Styron of the Pioneers finished 24th in the Freshman/Sophomore Race (18:01). WHS travels to Newton for the United Way Invitational Wednesday.
