Appalachian State University resumes Southern Conference play and closes a stretch of four home games in five weeks when it hosts Elon on Saturday

at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff for Appalachian's annual homecoming contest is set for 3:30 p.m.

NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP
• Appalachian State (3-2, 1-1 SoCon) has won two-straight games over Chattanooga (34-17) and Coastal Carolina (55-14).

• Elon (2-3, 0-2 SoCon) has dropped consecutive SoCon games to Georgia Southern (26-23) and Wofford (49-24).

• Appalachian is looking to extend nearly a half-century of dominance over Elon. The Mountaineers have won 16-straight games in the series, dating back to 1965.

• In nine games since Elon joined the Southern Conference in 2003, the Mountaineers have outscored the Phoenix, 341-164, good for an average score of 38-18.

• It looked like the Phoenix might snap its string of futility against Appalachian State last season when it jumped out to a 21-0 lead over the Mountaineers in the teams’ regular-season finale at Elon. However, the Apps rallied for a 28-24 win to match their biggest comeback victory since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1972.

• Appalachian is 37-11-2 in homecoming games played at Conrad/Kidd Brewer Stadium and has won nine-straight homecoming affairs.

• The Mountaineers put a 31-game home winning streak versus in-state opponents on the line this afternoon versus Elon. Appalachian has not lost at home to an in-state foe since Western Carolina left what was then known as Conrad Stadium with a 34-7 triumph over the Apps on Oct. 6, 1984.

• Thanks to amassing 400-plus yards in each of its first five games this season, including 684 in last Saturday’s 41-point rout over Coastal Carolina, Appalachian offense ranks among the top 25 nationally in each of the five major offensive categories — scoring (22nd - 33.0 ppg), rushing (21st - 212.2 ypg), passing (24th - 255.4 ypg), passing efficiency (23rd - 143.13 rating) and total offense (11th - 467.6 ypg).

• Saturday’s game features one of the most anticipated individual matchups of the year in NCAA Division I FCS between Appalachian State cornerback Demetrius McCray and Elon wide receiver Aaron Mellette. In last year’s showdown between two of the nation’s top FCS 2013 NFL Draft prospects, Mellette caught 14 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown but, after a monster first half, was limited to six catches for 87 yards and no scores in the second half. McCray finished with a career-high 11 tackles, two pass breakups and a key interception in Appalachian’s 28-24 come-from-behind win.
