The Watauga High men's soccer team completed its regular-season sweep of Fred T. Foard with a 2-1 win against the Tigers at Jack Groce Stadium in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference match Wednesday

night. Logan Raichle's goal on a penalty kick at the eight-minute mark gave WHS (12-1-3 overall; 5-0-2 NW3A/4A) a 1-0 lead; Alex Parsons scored on a direct kick from 35-yards out for a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
"And both goals were beautiful shots," said WHS coach Woody McKay, who has the Pioneers on the brink of their first conference championship since 2007. "Logan scored our first goal of the season in conference play with a penalty kick against these guys. Ironically, it was in the very same spot as well. Their keeper knew it and couldn't stop it. Alex just boomed his shot in. He hit it hard. It ricocheted in off the post."
The Tigers scored their goal with seven minutes left in the match. The win also keeps WHS in sole possession of first place in the NW3A/4A. St. Stephens (4-1-2 in league play) kept pace with a 4-2 win against Alexander Central; Hickory (14-1 overall) defeated Forestview 4-0 in a non-conference game.
The Pioneers travel to Hickory next Monday night.
The Pioneers handed Hickory its only loss of the season with a 3-1 win at Jack Groce Stadium on September 12. That win snapped Hickory's 32-game winning streak in league play dating back to 2009 (their last loss prior to the WHS match was a 1-0 loss to St. Stephens on September 28, 2009).
"The championship still runs through Hickory," McKay said. "It's nice to be in first place, but we haven't accomplished anything yet. We need a win or a tie next Monday night to secure our situation."
NOTES: Goalkeeper Conner Fox of St. Stephens set a new state record for saves in a single season Wednesday night. He had 13 stops against the Cougars, which gives him a state record 312 on the year. He surpassed former Indians' goalkeeper Justin Gotchy, who originally set the record in 2001....The WHS JV team suffered its second loss in a row, falling to Fred T. Foard, 1-0.

Foard was third with a 45. Hartsell leads Wood, who won the NW3A/4A individual championship last season as a sophomore, by 14 strokes. Hartsell has an individual score of 104; Wood is at 118.
