UNCG senior forward Hakan Ilhan has been named the Southern Conference’s men’s soccer player of the week for all matches Sept. 24-30. The selection is made by the league office. Ilhan had a banner week for the Spartans,
helping UNCG to a 2-0 start in Southern Conference play. For the week, Ilhan had six points on four assists and a goal. He had a hand in all five of UNCG’s goals on the week as the Spartans downed Davidson and Appalachian State to move to the top of the SoCon standings in the early going. Against Davidson on Sept. 25, Ilhan assisted on all four goals in UNCG’s 4-0 win over the Wildcats. The four assists, which all came in the first half, matched a school record that has stood since 1981. The Stuttgart, Germany, native had UNCG’s lone goal in a 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Saturday, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner in the 39th minute. The victory avenged UNCG’s lone regular-season conference loss from last year’s SoCon regular-season title run. Ilhan leads UNCG with six goals on the season and is second in the SoCon in scoring with 17 points. His four assists on the week vaulted him into a tie for the league lead in that category with five on the season. He is the league’s active career leader in assists (17) and is second in goals (28), putting him second among active players in total points with 73. The weekly award is the second of Ilhan’s career, as he was also the league’s player of the week on Aug. 30, 2011. Ilhan becomes the second Spartan to be honored this season, joining Maximilian Schulz, who took the season’s first award on Aug. 28. UNCG (4-4-2) steps back out of conference play to host Clemson on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Also nominated: Luke Huggett (College of Charleston), Chris Thomas (Elon) and Connor Davis (Wofford).

Furman’s Stephanie DeVita Named Player of Week
Furman freshman forward Stephanie DeVita has been named the Southern Conference’s women’s soccer player of the week for all matches Sept. 24-30. The award is selected by the league office. DeVita scored three goals in Furman’s two games on the week, lifting her season total to a SoCon-best 13 on the season. The Simpsonville, S.C., native scored a crucial late goal in a 2-2 draw with league-leading Samford on Thursday and added two more in a 5-1 win over Chattanooga on Sunday. Against the Bulldogs, DeVita hooked a 20-yard, left-footed effort past Samford’s keeper with 25 seconds left in regulation to complete the Paladins’ rally from a 2-0 deficit and send the match to extra time. Neither team could get the golden goal as Furman snapped Samford’s 12-match winning streak against SoCon opponents. Against Chattanooga on Sunday, DeVita padded her league scoring lead with goals in the 54th and 73rd minutes to give the Paladins some breathing room. DeVita’s 13 goals this season are tops in the nation amongst freshmen and third overall, while her five game-winners are also good for third nationally. Her 28 total points rank sixth in NCAA Division I. She leads the SoCon in all three categories. The weekly award is the first of DeVita’s career. Furman (9-2-1, 2-1-1 SoCon) returns to action on Friday when it hosts UNCG (6-6, 3-1 SoCon) in Greenville, S.C., at 7 p.m. Also nominated: Megan Roberson (Appalachian State), Sarah Cardamone (College of Charleston), Mariana Garcia (The Citadel), Rachael Newmister (Davidson), Chelsey Stark (Elon), Sydnie Van Curen (Georgia Southern), Lauren Hein (UNCG), Brittany Hoffman (Samford), Lauren Thomas (Chattanooga) and Mary Beth Bleekrode (Wofford).
