The Watauga High men's soccer team gave up a late goal in the second overtime period and earned a 2-2 tie with St. Stephens Monday night in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference match at Jack Groce Stadium. Luke Bruce scored the
late tally for the Indians (8-5-2 overall; 3-1-2 NW3A/4A) with two minutes left to play. The tie, however, keeps WHS (11-1-3; 4-0-2) in sole possession of first place.
"We just let down at the end and they tied it up," said WHS coach Woody McKay. "They scored on a direct kick. We had a break down defensively and they pounced on the loose ball. But I thought we did a great job battling back to take the lead."
The Indians led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Nich Bryant. But the Pioneers eventually tied the game on a goal by Tucker Chasteen at the 59-minute mark of the second half. Alex Parsons had the assist on that goal. And the Pioneers eventually took a 2-1 lead as Justin Hall tallied in the first overtime period. Logan Raichle set up Parsons with an excellent pass. Parsons blasted his shot off the post, but Hall finished up as he tapped it in.
But the Indians managed to pull off a tie on Bruce's goal; Bryant had an assist on the play. The Pioneers travel to Fred T. Foard Wednesday night. St. Stephens handed the JV team its first loss of the year. The Indians, who are undefeated at the JV level, defeated the Pioneers, 2-0.
