Appalachian State University women’s basketball released its schedule for the upcoming 2012-13 season on Monday, Sept. 24. This year’s schedule features 11 home contests and a number of tough non-conference games, including road
tests at Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Xavier. The Mountaineers open their season with an open intrasquad scrimmage on Oct. 23 before an exhibition against Mars Hill on Oct. 27. The Apps will host Lees-McRae in the regular-season opener on Nov. 9 at the Holmes Center. Appalachian will then travel to Virginia Tech on Nov. 14 before returning to the High Country for a game against Gardner-Webb on Nov. 20. The Apps will spend Thanksgiving weekend in Greenville, N.C. where they will face Campbell (Nov. 24) and Norfolk State (Nov. 25) at the ECU Pirate Invitational Thanksgiving Tournament. App State will round out the first month of the season with a road test at Xavier on Nov. 30. The Mountaineers begin defense of their Southern Conference title when they host Georgia Southern on Dec. 3 before back-to-back road games with East Tennessee State (Dec. 18) and West Virginia (Dec. 28). The newest member of the Big XII, West Virginia advanced to the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament after finishing in a fourth-place tie in the BIG EAST a year ago. The Mountaineers finished with a 24-10 record and spent much of the season ranked in the top-25 in both the USA Today/ESPN Coaches and Associated Press polls. The Apps return to SoCon action with contests at Davidson (Jan. 5) and Furman (Jan. 7) to begin the new year. A home matchup with archrival Western Carolina takes place on Jan. 12 followed by road games at Wofford (Jan. 14) and College of Charleston (Jan. 18). App State returns home on Jan. 20 against UNCG before hitting the road for contests against Chattanooga (Jan. 26) and two-time defending league champion Samford (Jan. 28). The month of February will begin with a home contest against Elon (Feb. 2) before the squad travels south to face Georgia Southern (Feb. 4). A string of three home contests await the Mountaineers upon their return as they will face Davidson (Feb. 9), Furman (Feb. 11) and Wofford (Feb. 16). A trip to Western Carolina will follow on Feb. 18 before College of Charleston makes the trek up the Mountain on Feb. 20. The final two road games of the season take place at UNCG (Feb. 23) and Elon (Feb. 25). The Mountaineers will wrap up the regular season with a pair of home contests against Chattanooga (March 2) and Samford (March 4) before heading to Asheville, N.C. for the SoCon Championships, which run from March 8-11.
