A two-year old child was killed in a crash just out of Jefferson Saturday afternoon, and three others were hurt. The 4 p.m. crash occurred as the child’s mother, 23-year old Jessica Myers, turned left from US 221 onto Mt. Jefferson Road
into the path of the Ford Excursion of Allen Cole of Lansing. The SUV struck Myers’ Dodge Neon in the passenger side, near where 2-year old Brayden Roten was seated. Blue Ridge Medical Transport, Ashe County Rescue Squad, West Jefferson Fire Department all worked feverishly to free the child from the car, rushing him to Ashe Memorial Hospital, but the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The sister of Brayden Roten, Zoey Roten, 1, and both drivers were also taken to Ashe Memorial, but Trooper Brown said that the injured were released after treatment. Trooper Brown said there were still a number of factors under investigation from the wreck, and charges are pending.
