Taylor Pritchett (Apex, N.C.) posted a season-high seven service aces, and Angela Morse (Clinton Township, Mich.) and Rachel Grether (Ocala, Fla.) each added seven kills to lead the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team to a
straight-set victory over Converse College in Conference Carolinas play on Friday evening.
Lees-McRae (5-6, 2-2 CC) won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-13, and 25-10, posting a .386 hitting percentage on the night while limiting Converse (0-14, 0-4 CC) to a .175 attacking clip. The Bobcats recorded 41 kills and 41 digs in the contest while dropping in 16 service aces.
Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with a match-high nine kills, as Morse and Grether both hit .600 or better while each posted seven smashes. Pritchett added 22 assists, seven aces, and six digs, while Megan Mitchell (Minden, Nev.) chipped in seven digs and five aces to take over the top spot on the program's all-time aces list. Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Haydn Beatty (Norman, Okla.) each added five kills as Sariah Suryadevara (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted a match-high 10 digs.
Katie Butler and Michaela Evans led the way for Converse with four kills each, as Aubrey Crosby added a team-high nine digs. Maureen Collins chipped in three kills on six attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead in the first set, launching a 5-0 run to open a 14-6 advantage on a Clendenin kill. After Converse trimmed the margin to 16-10 with a 4-2 spurt, Lees-McRae countered with a 9-3 surge to claim the set following back-to-back kills from Clendenin and a smash by Morse.
Lees-McRae carried the momentum into the second set, opening a 16-8 lead following a kill from Kallai Johnston (Statesville, N.C.) to cap a 6-0 run. The Bobcats would hold on from there, taking the set by a 25-13 margin after Morse capped the frame and an 8-2 run with a kill.
The Bobcats continued to dictate play in the third, taking an early 8-3 advantage on a kill by Dana Oliver (Miami, Fla.) following three straight aces by Mitchell. After Pritchett pushed the margin to 17-6 with back-to-back aces and Converse trimmed the lead to 19-9, Lees-McRae countered with a 6-1 spurt to close out the set and the match on a kill by Lauren Fox (Garland, Texas).
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats host Erskine College in conference action at 2 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
