A determined Bulldog squad jumped out to a 31-0 in the first half before Appalachian State University football found its footing in a 52-28 setback in the Mountaineers' Southern Conference opener on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Steven Miller carried the ball 21 times for a career-high 167 yards and three scores to pace the Appalachian (1-2, 0-1 SoCon) offense. Jamal Jackson added 164 passing yards on 23-of-32 attempts to accompany 53 rushing yards on eight attempts. The Citadel's (3-0, 2-0) rushing attack amassed 463 yards on 63 attempts with six scores on the ground. Ben Dupree carried the ball 20 times for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Darien Robinson notched 113 yards on 13 carries, while Rickey Anderson also topped the century mark with 102 yards on nine rushes.
Defensively, Jeremy Kimbrough made a team-high 14 tackles, while Patrick Blalock added 10. Troy Sanders forced a fumbles and made six tackles for the Apps.
