 The Watauga High women's tennis team resembles the "Energizer Bunny", they just keep going-and-going. The Pioneers (8-0 overall; 1-0 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) defeated Alexander Central 9-0 in the NW3A/4A Conference opener
for both teams in Taylorsville. The Pioneers dominated the match by sweeping singles play. Meredith Smith, Hannah Petersen, Nicole Fox, Emily Burwell, Kelsi Kanoy and Annika Davidson were victorious in singles play with each player winning their respective matches in straight sets. Smith and Gab Neufeld won their match at No.1 doubles, Petersen and Ali Maupin were victorious at No.2 doubles; Fox and Savannah Copeland won their match at No.3. Kylie Winkelmann and Taylor Paige and Addie Hall and Jessica Benyon won their exhibition matches in doubles play. The Pioneers take on Asheville in a non-conference match at the Sports Complex this afternoon at 4 p.m.

WHS NETTERS WHIP COUGARS IN FOUR SETS
The Watauga High volleyball team shook off the effects of a slow start and defeated Alexander Central 3-1 in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference match Thursday night in Taylorsville. The Cougars won the opening set 25-17, but the Pioneers (9-2 overall; 4-0 NW3A/4A) bounced back to win the next three games, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20. "I was real impressed with Alexander Central," said WHS coach Kris Hagaman. "They came out real aggressive in the first game and caught us off guard. But the girls regrouped and we won a big conference match on the road." Kristen Carter led the Pioneers with 41 assists. Ashlyn Van Dyke, who will be our halftime guest during Friday's football broadcast between the Pioneers and Fred T. Foard on Oldies 100.7 FM (air time 6:30 p.m.), had 22 digs. Rebecca Hayes had 15 kills and six blocks; Keirston McClannon had 12 kills and 11 digs. The Pioneers return home to play South Caldwell next Tuesday night. NOTES: WHS will host a tri-match next Saturday, September 22 at Lentz-Eggers Gym with Southern Alamance and Pfafftown-Reagan. The JV team (8-1; 4-0) defeated Alexander Central in two games, 27-25, 25-13. Sarah Combs led the way with 15 assists, five aces, three kills and two blocks. Blake Byrd and Sydney Farthing had five kills apiece.
