The Watauga High womenh's golf team began Northwestern 3A/4A Conference play Tuesday at the Boone Golf Club. And the Pioneers, playing on their home course, came through with a solid effort by finishing third with a team score of
137. The Pioneers finished seven shots behind South Caldwell, which won the meet with a team score of 130. Savanna Wood, a two-time state qualifier, who finished fourth at the Class 4A state meet last fall, paced the field with a one over par 36. She bested the field by two strokes. Abby Hartsell finished second with a 38. "The girls did a good job today in our first conference match," said WHS coach Jamie Wilson. "We finished third, but we are not far off of the leaders and I think this season is fairly wide open. Savanna did a great job shooting a one shot over par. She made a great shot at No.8. She birdied the hole with a chip-in from the bunker." Tasha Wilson fired a 48 for the Pioneers; Rebekah Shoemake had a 53, Mary Seramur had a 54, and Spencer Townsend had a 60. The Pioneers travel to Orchard Hills next Tuesday, September 18. South Caldwell will host.
