 Appalachian State University men's golf opened the fall 2012 campaign with 36 holes on Monday at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate. The Mountaineers carded a 294-291=585 (+9) to stand in 11th place heading
into Tuesday's final round. Junior Casey Komline led the charge with an even 72-72=144 (E) to stand in a tie for 23rd after two rounds. Senior Josh Nichols was right behind in 29th at 71-74=145 (+1). John Michael Cole ranked third for the Apps with a 78-71=149 (+5) to tie in 51st, while Lee Mitchell made his Black & Gold debut with a 76-74=160 (+6) to tie for 57th. Senior Jay Brown tied for 70th with a 75-77=152 (+8). Gardner-Webb leads the tournament with a 564 (-12), four strokes ahead of Old Dominion. GWU's Matt Yelverton is tied with Loyola Maryland's Brendan Lamp for the lead at 136 (-8), at least two strokes ahead of the rest of the field. Several Southern Conference teams are represented, including seventh-place Wofford at 578 (+2), 10th-place Furman at 583 (+7) who is two strokes ahead of App State. Elon stands in 14th place at 590 (+14). The teams return to the Country Club of South Carolina Tuesday morning for the final round.
