Group Seeks YMCA for Watauga PDF Print

An effort is underway to develop community support for a new YMCA facility for Watauga County. Community leaders are being contracted for an informational meeting, to be held on October 2nd at the Watauga Medical Center auditorium. The effort comes just over two years after a controversial quarter cent tax referendum was rejected by Watauga voters that would have built an aquatic center. Bob Conklin, CEO/President for YMCA of Catawba Valley will speak to the gathering, assessing potential support for a new ‘Y’ in Watauga. The invitation, sent by Scott St. Clair and Brian Lowe,  says that this is a “grassroots, nonpartisan effort to develop a viable plan to address our community's undisputed needs for a year-round, indoor recreational facility - AND - an additional child care option for working parents.” The event is to be hosted by a group called “High Country Recreation” - a newly formed local nonprofit that their invitation says is “committed to making the High Country a sustainable and healthy community by providing the comprehensive information source about recreation and advocating for improved recreation opportunities.” There’s more information at:
