Three were injured—two of those pinned in—and a 14-year old boy was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a grinding head-on crash at the Watauga-Wilkes line late yesterday afternoon. Trooper C.M. Anderson’s report indicated that 16-year old Charles Anderson Harmon, IV, of Winston-Salem, driver of an ’05 Toyota, may have fallen asleep while traveling north on US 421. Just before the Watauga line, he went left of center and slammed head-on into a south-bound ’05 Chevrolet pickup of Dawn Annette Tyson, of Bethel. Harmon’s cousin, a 14-year old boy, was pinned for a time, and was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center from near the scene of the 5pm crash. Champion Fire and first responders started the rescue effort, soon joined by Wilkes Rescue and EMS, with Deep Gap called into set up a landing zone for the Baptist Air Care shopper en route to the scene.  For a time, it appeared two would be airlifted, but the other two victims were rushed to Baptist by ground. Tyson’s husband was not injured in the crash, in which Charles Harmon IV was cited for failure to maintain lane control.
