The North Carolina National Guard identified one of four victims of the crash of a C-130 aircraft Sunday in South Dakota as a Boone man, Maj. Ryan S. David, 35.  Two others were critically hurt.  Major David was killed when the C-130 crashed (Photo; Christian Science Monitor) while fighting a woodland fire in southwestern South Dakota, part of a massive effort to control a raging fire, according to Lt. Col. Robert Carver of the N.C. Air National Guard. David served as navigator and was assigned to the 156th Airlift Squadron of the North Carolina Air National Guard, joining in 2011 after service in the active-duty Air Force, according to Carver.  He is survived by his wife and one child.  Others killed were identified as Lt. Col. Paul K. Mikeal, 42, of Mooresville; Maj. Joseph M. McCormick, 36, of Belmont; and Senior Master Sgt. Robert S. Cannon, 50, of Charlotte. The crew was part of the Charlotte-based 145th Airlift Wing of the North Carolina Air National Guard. Three crews and C-130s flew from Charlotte to Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo., last weekend to assist with fighting forest fires in the Rocky Mountain region, according to Carver. He said that the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time Sunday near Edgemont, S.D. The crash and one earlier in the year have caused C-130s with specific firefighting gear to be grounded.
