For the second day in a row, the Hickory Crawdads and the Kannapolis Intimidators split a doubleheader. The Intimidators took game one, 7-6, which featured two rain delays, before the 'Dads cruised to the 4-2 win in game two
at L.P. Frans Stadium. In the opener, Kannapolis (18-27) took a commanding 7-0 lead by the fourth inning. The teams also endured a pair of rain delays that lasted for more than an hour.
The Crawdads (21-23) finally got things going in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Kellin Deglin and a two-run homer by Jordan Akins made it 7-3. The Crawdads inched a little closer with two more runs in the fifth, thanks to a two-run bomb by Rougned Odor that cut the lead at 7-5. An RBI ground by Jhonny Gomez made it 7-6 in the bottom oi the sixth, but Steven Upchurch, who picked up his third save, quelled the rally in the seventh.
With Drew Robinson representing the tying run at third base with two outs, Deglin ripped a line drive up the middle that was snagged by Upchurch as he tried to duck out of the way to end the game.
In game two, the Crawdads scored a run in each of the first four innings for a 4-2 win. An RBI double by Zach Cone gave the Crawdads a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning; a run-scoring single by Odor in the second inning gave Hickory a 2-0 advantage; Hanser Alberto led off the third inning with a solo home run that made it 3-0; and an RBI fielder's choice by Kevin Torres in the fourth gave the Crawdads a 4-0 lead.
Nick McBride got the starting nod in game two and tossed four scoreless innings in a spot start, striking out three batters and scattering just three hits, Phil Klein (3-0), who got the win in relief, took over for the final three innings. Kannapolis scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but Klein settled the issue for Hickory.
