State Rep. Cullie Tarleton visited our offices to respond to claims about new taxes made in flyers being distributed by the NC Association of Realtors. The flyers claim that the legislature is considering a new home transfer tax.
According to State Representative Cullie Tarleton, those reports are in error. Tarleton stated that no transfer fee will be created without a local referendum vote. Tarleton went on to assure the people of Watauga County that there is no plan in Raleigh for any “home tax” on Watauga County. This tax has been proposed as one of several options to replace Medicaid tax income, if the state were to take over that function, and statewide school construction costs. The state has not decided to take over the Medicaid budget, however the issue is contentious. North Carolina is the only state in the nation where counties supply Medicaid. County governments collectively made this their high-priority item for this N.C. Legislative session.
