 The Watauga High men's tennis team is on a roll. The Pioneers (5-0 overall; 3-0 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) knocked off Newton-Conover 5-4 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match in Newton. Michael Smith, Landon Taylor, Chris Ludwig
and Jackson Yates won in singles; Yates teamed up with Aaron Evans for a victory in doubles that decided the outcome. The Pioneers return home to play Hibriten today in a NW3A/4A match at 4:30 p.m.
COUGARS BLITZ PIONEERS, 15-2
The Watauga High softball team had its modest three-game winning streak snapped by Alexander Central 15-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Sports Complex. The Cougars, who led 4-1 going into the third inning, broke the contest open by scoring five times in the frame to take a 9-1 lead. Kim Robinson homered in the losing cause; Riley Pudney had two hits, including a triple. The Pioneers (3-4 overall; 1-2 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) travel to South Caldwell next Tuesday, March 20. Alexander Central won the JV game, 20-2. Savannah Drummonds had two triples to pace the JV team.
