Sutphen Signs Pro Contract PDF Print

Former Avery High quarterback Garrett Sutphen has signed a contract to play professional football with the Cape Fear Heroes of the American Indoor Football League. The Heroes are based in

Fayetteville, N.C. Sutphen played college football at UNC-Pembroke, a Division II school in Pembroke, N.C.
Sutphen, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 210 pounds, played one year at Tusculum College (2007) before he transferred to UNC-Pembroke. At Avery, he threw for more than 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns, leading the Vikings to 11 wins during his senior year in 2005. He also ran for 737 yards and 19 touchdowns that season. He transferred to Avery from Bunn High School in Tennessee just before his senior year in the fall of 2005.
Sutphen, in his final season at UNC-Pembroke in 2009 as a red-shirt junior, only played in five games and threw for 97 yards. He played nine games for the Braves in 2008.
He also earned Most Valuable Player accolades as a member of the basketball team at Avery County, and he lettered three times in baseball at both Avery and Bunn.
