A young Wilkes county man was injured and charged in a crash that claimed the life of a well known Alexander County businessman. The crash was on NC 16 Tuesday morning, killing Ned Deal, 75, of Taylorsville, who was pronounced dead at the scene when his pickup truck was hit head-on in the 6:45 a.m. wreck, according to Trooper Dwight Taylor with the N.C. Highway Patrol. The other driver in the accident, Lucas Wilmoth, 22, of North Wilkesboro, was taken to N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem where he is listed in stable condition, Taylor said. The accident occurred three miles north of Taylorsville near the intersection of Highway 16 and St. Clair Road, Taylor said. Deal was heading north on Highway 16 when Wilmoth crossed left of the center line and hit Deal head-on. Deal’s 1999 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck overturned on the roadway, Taylor said. Wilmoth’s 2003 Ford Ranger pickup truck caught fire and a passerby pulled Wilmoth from the wreckage. Taylor said Wilmoth was on his way to work. No one was speeding or intoxicated, Taylor said. They both had on seatbelts. Deal had been the owner of Deal’s Specialty Cars on Old Wilkesboro Road Extension for more than 40 years, Taylor said. Wilmoth is charged with going left of center and misdemeanor death by vehicle, Taylor said.
