With the holidays fast approaching we are reminded of what is truly important this time of year, the spirit of giving. The Smile for a Lifetime Foundation is a charitable, non-profit organization that provides orthodontic care to individuals who may not otherwise have the opportunity to acquire assistance. Nationally launched in 2008, the local Boone chapter with Drs. Mayhew and Scheffler followed in Fall 2009 and is committed to giving the gift of smiles to young children in the High Country community.  The program is supported by the orthodontic company Ormco, one of the largest orthodontic suppliers of services for orthodontists.  Through this partnership, Ormco provides the appliances used for the children selected for the “Smile Scholarship” and the treatment services provided at no cost for the child’s family.
Drs. Mayhew and Scheffler are proud to announce four Smile Scholarships awarded to deserving children in our community. Kaitlin Hickman, a 7th grader at North Wilkes, was nominated by her Elementary School Principal and Teacher, Rebecca Mastin and Ann Henry who state she has the warmest heart and will now have the sweetest smile to match!  Jarrett Barnes, a 7th grader at Cove Creek, was nominated by teachers Kim Houck, Julianne Spradlin and Dean Sheilds. All teachers expressed that this opportunity would give Jarrett a new found confidence.  Landria Brown, a 9th grader at WCHS was nominated by Dr. Thomas Musson and Dr. Tim Van Noy. Paula Brown, Landria’s mother stated that she is excited to have her smile finally fit her daughter’s beautiful personality.  Carousel Walker, a 7th grader at William Lenoir was nominated by TJ Williams, Suntrust Branch Manager, Dr. Terry Williams, Senior Pastor at The Life Center and Dr. Martha Hardaway.  All letters reference what an impact this scholarship would have on this family and how gratifying it would be to know that good things do happen to good people.
Locally controlled and managed, the Board of Directors are scheduled to meet to choose 6 additional Smile for a Lifetime recipients for the 2012 year.  If you know a deserving child in our community for whom a beautiful smile seems out of reach due to financial reasons or other special needs, please complete an application available at the Orthodontic and Pediatric Dental offices of Drs. Mayhew, Conn, Scheffler and Hardaway, their website at www.opsmiles.com or www.S4L.org.  The gift of a smile is truly for a Lifetime!
