The situation just inside Tennessee is evolving, with more and more North Carolina resources heading across the state line. Emergency Management from Watauga, Boone Haz-Mat units, and law enforcement from Watauga are being called across the state line to help with two areas of concern. One is near the Bulldog Road intersection with US 421
very near the Trade Volunteer Fire Department, where one of the trucks is leaking a load of 4500 gallons of liquid nitrogen. Then there’s the 150 gallon tank of diesel fuel, knocked off a truck, is being handled by Watauga volunteer departments Boone Fire and emergency management from Watauga. Traffic going into Tennessee is being blocked on the North Carolina side, law enforcement and volunteer fire departments heading north-bound 421 traffic onto US 321at the Skateworld intersection, at another section of old 421 near the state line, and at the state line itself, as well as some of the back roads entering Tennessee. On the Tennessee side, Johnson County dispatch says they’re diverting from Tennessee 167 and 421 at the Food Lion in Mountain City to US 321 and onto highway 88 heading into Ashe. One report we have is that the incident involved a hit-and-run, but details are yet to be released in the emergency situation. Just how long the blockage will last depends on the careful clearing of the wreck site—some sources say all day—and we’ll keep you up to date on the latest.
