Elementary school teachers, media specialists, and anyone interested in Children’s Literature are invited to attend a Children’s Literature Symposium November 5, 2011. All events are sponsored by, and will take place in, the new Reich College of Education building and the Carol Grotnes Belk Library

and Information Commons on the campus of Appalachian State University.

The symposium will feature Deborah Wiles, author of several popular elementary and middle-grade books: Love, Ruby Lavender, The Aurora County All-Stars, Each Little Bird That Sings -- a finalist for the 2005 National Book Award. She will feature her new book, Countdown, at the symposium.  Countdown is a groundbreaking documentary novel that weaves historical events with the story of an eleven-year-old girl whose life is affected by the Cuban missile crisis.

Wiles will speak about how to use her books as teaching tools to improve reading, writing and self-expression and will work with area school children and teachers at two local elementary schools. “Meeting children’s book authors and illustrators has a profound impact on young readers and writers, as children view them as heroes,” said Margaret Gregor, Coordinator of the Instructional Materials Center at Appalachian and co-chair of the event.

Poetry Alive! will perform and will offer a session on teaching with poetry in the classroom and school media center.

Pre-registration is required, and the deadline to register is October 28. The $20 registration fee includes lunch and all performances and activities. Free parking is available next door to the symposium location. Read more and register online today.
