Placekicker, punter Sam Martin of Appalachian State University has been named the Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks. The ASU junior from Fayetteville, Ga., who won this honor back on September 2, made an impact as both a punter and placekicker Saturday as the Mountaineers downed Savannah State, 41-6. The junior punted five times and averaged 47.0 yards per kick. He had three punts downed inside the 20-yard line, including two inside the five. Martin had a booming punt of 55 yards and now leads the nation with 47.4 yards per punt.
And Martin also connected on two field goal attempts from 41 and 51 yards out and was a perfect 5-for-5 in PATs. His 51-yard kick, his second from that distance in as many games (he booted a 51 yarder against North Carolina A&T on September 9), is tied for the seventh-longest field goal made in school history.
The Mountaineers (2-1) begin SoCon play Saturday at home against Chattanooga.
