Appalachian State women's soccer (3-4-0) was defeated by Virginia Tech (8-1-0) by a score of 4-0 on Thursday.
Appalachian fought off the Hokies' attack effectively for half of the opening period, but Virginia Tech's leading goal-scorer Kelly Conheeney struck in the 25th minute.
Less than three minutes later, Shannon Mayrose scored her first of two goals in the half. The Hokies totaled four goals in under 12 minutes to jump out to an insurmountable 4-0 halftime lead.
The Mountaineers earned their only corner kick of the game in the 63rd minute but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Once the game was complete, the dust settled with the Hokies in possession of a 14-0 advantage in shots. In her seventh complete game of the season, ASU's Amy Kolowsky was able to stop three of Virginia Tech's seven shots on goal.
"Virginia Tech was a very good team," noted ASU coach Sarah Strickland. "We fought hard in the second half and achieved the goal we set at halftime of not conceding another goal. I'm proud of how the team responded and the leadership shown by our upperclassmen in their performance tonight."
Appalachian looks to rebound in its next game, a road match against High Point (2-4-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
