ASU Ranked In Top 5 Nationally PDF Print
Written by Mike Kelly

The Appalachian State University football team, coming off its blowout win Saturday at home against North Carolina A&T, is ranked third in the national polls this week.

The Mountaineers (1-1) are ranked third in The Sports Network Poll and third in the FCS Coaches Poll. ASU also received ten first-place votes in the TSN Poll, but did not receive any first place votes in the FCS Poll. Georgia Southern (2-0), which had an easy time against non-conference opponent Tusculum on Saturday, is the new No.1 team in the nation in the TSN Top 25; the Eagles also received 102 first place votes. Eastern Washington, which lost to South Dakota on Saturday at home, falls to 10th, but the EWU did receive two first-place votes.
However, the Eagles, despite their 0-2 record, are still No.1 in the FCS Poll; EWU received 22 first-place votes to remain in the top spot. Georgia Southern is No.2. The Eagles received six first-place votes. Northern Iowa, which is ranked second in the TSN Poll, is tied with ASU at No.3 in the FCS Top 25.
The biggest surprise has to be Wofford College. The Terriers (1-1), despite their near upset bid of Clemson Saturday, fell in the polls; they fell to spots from No.7 to No.9 in the TSN Poll and from No.8 to No.9 in the FCS Poll. Chattanooga moved up nine spots in the TSN Poll from No.23 to No.14 (the Mocs travel to Boone September 24) following its 38-17 win against Jacksonville State at home Saturday. But the Mocs (1-1) dropped two spots in the FCS Poll from No.23 to No.25.
ASU closes out the non-conference schedule Saturday at home with a 6 p.m. game against Savannah State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Our coverage of that game begins at 4 p.m. on AM 1450, WATA.
NOTES: Wide Receiver Joel Bradford tied his career high with 15 receptions as the Mocs knocked off No. 10 Jacksonville State, 38-17.  It was Chattanooga's first win over a top-10 team since 2000.  Bradford finished with 162 receiving yards and one TD. Late in the second quarter,.....Linebacker Wes Dothard of the Mocs recorded five tackles for the Mocs Saturday against the Gamecocks.  He added a forced fumble, one pass break-up and a quarterback hurry......Running back Shaun Warren of Western Carolina rushed 21 times for 203 yards and 4 TDs as Western Carolina raced past Mars Hill, 52-31.  Warren averaged 9.7 yards per carry and became the eighth player in school history to turn in a 200-yard rushing performance......Place kicker Chas Short of Furman accounted for 10 of the Paladins 16 points in a 16-6 win at The Citadel Saturday. Playing in just his second game, Short also connected on a 46-yard field goal, and was just short on a 48-yard attempt.
