ASU Volleyball Pick Up Win At MSU Invitational PDF Print

Kelly Rhein and Anna Wagner each tallied 12 kills as the Appalachian State Volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over George Mason in four sets on Saturday at the Morehead State Invitational.

The Mountaineers (5-5) dropped the first set (25-23) before rallying to sweep the final three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14. As a team, the Apps hit  .326 compared to just .142 for the Patriots (3-5).
George Mason jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead and would lead by as any as four points (6-2) early in the first set but the Mountaineers would battle back to tie the score on eight different occasions.
The Patriots were forced to call a timeout after the Apps rallied to tie it a 22-22 late in the first set, but GMU reeled off three-straight points to take the first set.
It would be all Appalachian from that point on as he Mountaineers took a 6-5 advantage in the second set and never trailed on their way to  a 25-18 second set win.
The Apps would find themselves trailing in the third set by a 7-4 margin before striking for six unanswered points to take a 10-7 lead that they would never relinquish. The Mountaineers finished off the Patriots in convincing fashion in the fourth and final set.
Appalachian raced out to a 14-7 lead and extended the margin to 18-8 before finishing off the Patriots with 4-1 run over the final five points to win by a score of 25-14.
The Apps finished with four blocks while the Patriots recorded three. The Mountaineers also had three players hit .300 or better including Wagner (.417) and Jessica Eley (.562). Kasey Sauls chipped in with 27 assists and eight digs while hitting .333.
Wagner earned all-Tournament honors after finishing the weekend with 40 kills and 34 digs in three matches. The senior outside hitter has led the team in kills eight times this season.
Appalachian State returns to action as part of the James Madison University Classic next weekend. The Mountaineers will begin the tournament with a match against Georgetown on Friday at 5 p.m. ET and conclude play with matches against East Tennessee State and James Madison on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET and 7:30 p.m. ET, respectively.


FIELD HOCKEY: Bears Claws Pass Mountaineers, 3-2


Appalachian State field hockey fell short in a 3-2 thriller against on Saturday afternoon Missouri State in Louisville, Ky.

The Bears scored first in the 13th minute on a direct penalty corner shot by Sarah Bradley.  The Mountaineers responded in the 27th minute by a goal from senior Lauren Kloeppinger, and assisted by fellow senior Kelly Allaband.
The Black and Gold took an early second-half lead when freshman Brooke Angellella put a shot past the goalie for her second goal of the seasodn off an assist by Casey Lammando.  Missouri State tied the game 2-2 on a goal by Bradley, for her second score of the game.  The Bears’ Hillary Lawless netted the game-winning goal in the 58th minute to improve Missouri State to a 2-3 record as ASU falls to 0-4.
The Apps look to bounce back quickly as they take on Louisville at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
