WHS XC Dominates Caldwell County Meet PDF Print

The Watuaga High mens' and women's cross country teams turned the Caldwell County Invitational into the Pioneer Invitational Wednesday afternoon at the Lenoir Aquatic and Fitness Center Soccer Complex, Lenior, NC.

 

WHS junior Darby Middlebrook won her third consecutive race of the season by besting the field in 18:25.70; Peter Vandenberg of the Pioneers won the men's race in 16:52.49. The WHS women bested the field with 31 points. North Lincoln, which posted a second-place finish in both races, finished 18-points back with a score of 49. The men's race was a little tighter. WHS nosed out North Lincoln by three points, 47-50.
The women had seven finishers in the top 20; Hailey Middlebrook finished fourth (20:09.16), Madison Harmon was sixth (20:19.16), and Doria Kosmala was eighth (20:28.09). The men had five finisehrs in the top 20. Josh Anderson finished third in 17:09.74; Andrew Vandenberg finished sixth (17:29.01).
The WHS men captured the top three spots in the Open Race, and they had six finishers in the top ten. Freshman Michael Holland finished second in 18:37.70, sophomore Andrew Harrelson finished third in 18:37.93, and Matthew Osborne was fourth in 18:39.74. WHS won the race with 24 points. North Lincoln finished second with 58.
Julia Roberts won the girls Open Race in 21:46.36. Anna Shultz-Coulon finished third (22:30.98) and Celia Jackson was fourth (22:51.85). The WHS girls had six finishers in the top ten; 11 finishers in the top 20. WHS won the meet with a team score of 21 points. North Lincoln finished second with 55 points.
WHS coach Randy McDonough ran in the Adult/Coaches Mixed 2500 Meter Run and finished 11th in 11:09.84.

WHS TENNIS BEST BY MOUNT AIRY

 

The Watauga High women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Mount Airy Wednesday afternoon at the Sports Complex.
Meredith Smith lost a third-set tie-breaker at No.1 singles, 10-8; Sarah Petersen and Nicole Fox dropped an 8-6 decision at No.2 singles.
Emily Burwell and Kylie Winkleman eached picked up a victory in their exhibition singles matches. WHS (4-2 overall; 3-0 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) travels to Hickory on Thursday.

WOLVERINES KNOCKS OFF WEST ALEXANDER

 

The Watauga Middle School football team rallied from an early 8-0 deficit and defeated West Alexander 28-20 at Jack Groce Stadium Wednesday night.
The Wolverines (2-0) were led by quarterback Aaron Dobbins and wide receiver Michael Ebaugh. Those two hooked up on scoring passes of 60-, 28-, and 35-yards. Dobbins also scored on a four-yard run and he ran in both two-point conversions.
Nick Sherman, Hamilton Castle and Caleb Bryson all had receptions in Wednesday night's win. Corey West and Tanner Byrd each had an interceptions; Harrison Cobb recovered a fumble; defensive end Paul Zamudio was a stand out defensively. Fullback Evan Suggs paced the running game offensively.
Watuaga travels to East Alexander Wednesday, Septemnber 14.
