TERRELL LEAVING WAKE FOREST
Guard J.T. Terrell, who played at West Charlotte High School, is leaving the Wake Forest University basketball team after he was charged by Winston-Salem Police for driving impaired.
Terrell, who started 18 games last season and averaged 11 points-per-game, was arrested early Saturday morning. Terrell’s attorney, Mike Grace, said in a statement issued Monday through the school the circumstances of the arrest and other signs indicate that Terrell “suffers from a serious medical condition which requires immediate attention.”
In the statement, Terrell apologized and said he will spend the next few months rebuilding his life and hopes to play college basketball again. Terrell and West Charlotte defeated Watauga High in the Class 4A Sectional championship game in the final contest ever played at the old Lentz-Eggers Gym in March of 2010.
ELON TO RETIRE RIDDLE'S JERSEY
Elon University has announced that the Phoenix will retire quarterback Scott Riddle's No.16 jersey Saturday before the Concord game at Rhoades Stadium.
Riddle, who graduated last spring, played for the Phoenix from 2007-10, and he was named National Freshman of the Year by both College Sporting News and CollegeSportsReport.com while also earning the league's freshman of the year from both the coaches and media. That season, Riddle passed for a SoCon-record 3,817 yards and 31 touchdowns.
He is the fifth player in school history to have his number retired, and he holds 41 NCAA, Southern Conference or Elon records in his career. Riddle is also the all-time leading passer in SoCon history with 13,264 yards.
He threw for a SoCon-record 534-yard performance at Furman in 2007. Among the other league records the strong-armed Riddle holds are most completions in a season (346 in 2007), most consecutive games with a touchdown pass (22) and most consecutive pass attempts without an interception (218).
