Unseasonably High Temps Break Records on Grandfather Mountain PDF Print

Grandfather Mountain reported record daily high temperatures March 23rd, 24th and 25th according to the official US Weather Service Reporting Station. Located on the Mile High Bridge, the reporting stations’ recorded highs of 65 degrees March 23 broke a previous record of 63 degrees in 1971.

March 24th garnered a high of 63 degrees breaking a record of 61 degrees set in 1978. The trend continued on March 25th with a record high of 68th degrees, breaking the previous record of 66 degrees set in 1959. The all time highest temperature ever recorded at Grandfather in March was 72 degrees on March 30th, 1985. The folks at Grandfather Mountain are making it easier for you to experience spring on Grandfather. April first they are launching a month of dollar days for local residents. Anyone who can prove that they live or work in Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Allegheny and Wilkes Counties will pay just $1 dollar admission. Students at colleges and Universities in those counties will also get the discount. What to expect on Grandfather in April? The first wildflowers have already been spotted on the Mountain’s Profile Trail. The bears in the wildlife habitat are just starting to emerge, and the hiking trails are all open.
