ASU Announces Women’s Golf Schedule PDF Print

Five tournaments in the Carolinas, including three hosted by Southern Conference foes, highlight Appalachian State University women’s golf's fall schedule, released by fourth-year head coach Heather Brown on Tuesday.

Brown added, “We are now a top-heavy team with juniors and seniors. That experience, combined with the additions of redshirt junior transfer Lauren Smith (Salisbury, N.C./UNC Greensboro) and freshman Elena Thomas (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie), I expect us to be an even more competitive threat than we demonstrated last year.”

The Mountaineers open the campaign September 12-13 in Spartanburg, S.C. at Wofford’s Terrier Intercollegiate. ASU placed just four strokes behind eighth-place Wofford in the 2011 SoCon Tournament.

One week later, ASU competes in Western Carolina’s Great Smokies Intercollegiate (Sept. 19-20). ASU participates in the event for the 10th-straight season, where then-sophomore Yue Xu (Beijing, China/HuiJia Private School) placed ninth in 2010-11.

Brown’s Mountaineers travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Winthrop Intercollegiate on October 8-9. Host Winthrop tied for fifth in the 2011 Big South Tournament, with two players in the league’s top 20 finishers.

The Apps continue to the Low Country to take part in the Oct. 17-18 Charleston Southern Wendy’s Invitational. Appalachian placed third at the event last season, with three players finishing in the tournament’s top 13 at Charleston’s Coosaw Creek. ASU’s first-round 299 at the 2010 event established a new program record.

Next on the slate is the Lady Paladin Invitational on Oct. 28-30 in Greenville, S.C., where the Mountaineers last competed in 2005. Host Furman placed third at the 2011 Southern Conference Tournament.

The 2012 Southern Conference Tournament returns to Hilton Head, S.C. on April 15-17, capping off ASU’s yet-to-be-released spring schedule.

Brown’s squad returns seven players from 2010-11, including three seniors. The Mountaineers have set program records for team stroke average in each of the past two seasons.
