A bicyclist was killed this morning in a collision with a car during the running of ‘The Grizzly,’ a bicycling endorsed event connected to the Highland Games.  The state patrol said that 35-year old Erik O. Lie-Nielsen of Winston-Salem was killed in the 7:40am collision as he lost control of his bicycle traveling down Spanish Oak. The cycle crossed the center line and slammed into the red Subaru sedan of Avery resident Anita Watson, who was hurt in the crash, transported to Cannon Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries.  Another cyclist was hurt by debris hurled from the wreck.  Avery deputies had to close off the road for some time for emergency vehicles.
The event left Linville early this morning and was to return to the Highland Games site at McRae Meadows.  No charges would come from the state patrol’s investigation, according to the trooper.
