Martin Named to CFPA List PDF Print

Junior Sam Martin of Appalachian State University has been named to the College Football Performance Awards Punter Watch List.

Martin, a native of Fayetteville, Ga., averaged more than 39 yards a punt (39.2). He had seven punts of 50 yards or more, which includes a career-best 63 yarder. Martin also had 19 punts inside the 20-yard-line, a nd he induced 31 fair catches.
Martin also had 30 kick-offs in 2010, averaging 65.5 yards with three touchbacks. He was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team in 2009, and he was also named an Academic All-America.
He averaged 40-yards per attempt on 52 punts his freshman season, ranking him third among punters in the SoCon and 28th nationally. He alsohelped ASU compile a net punting average of 35.5 yards, ranking him 19th nationally.
Martin is one of four SoCon punters on the list. The others include, Cass Couey of The Citadel. Couey had a career-best 68 yard punt against Western Carolina on October 9. It was also the longest punt attempt of any kicker in the SoCon.
The others are Charlie Edwards of Georgia Southern, a first-team All-SoCon selection last fall, and Blake Cain of Western Carolina, a second-team All-SoCon selection. ASU opens the season at Virginia Tech on September 3.

 

CLANTON RELEASED BY MONTREAL

 

Defensive end Erik Clanton of The Citadel has been released by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.
Clanton signed with Montreal May 26. He played for the Bulldogs from 2007-10. He was the only first-team All-SoCon selection for the Bulldogs last season. In 11 games, Clanton made 62 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, he had nine quarterback sacks, he forced three fumbles and he recovered a fumble.
His 14 TFL ranked him third in the SoCon in 2010.
