Madison Bumgarner received a no-decision for his effort Friday night at Comerica Park in Detroit. The San Francisco Giants hung on to beat the Tigers 4-3 as they maintained their grip on first place in the National League West. Bumgarner (4-9) went 7 1/3 innings and only gave up one earned run on five hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.
The lefthander turned in his second solid performance in a row following his meltdown against the Minnesota Twins on June 21. Since that outing, he's allowed two runs in 14 1/3 innings, with 20 strikeouts and two walks.
The Giants snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth with a three-run rally. Pablo Sandoval's ground-rule double broke the tie and gave the Giants a 2-1 lead. San Francisco picked up some insurance when Jose Valverde and Brayan Villarreal both received bases-loaded walks. \
"We've had two similar losses in a row, so this would have been really tough," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Proud of the guys. They came through in the ninth and put up a crooked number when we haven't been cashing those in."
Bumgarner is scheduled to face San Diego at AT&T Park just before the All-Star break on Wednesday, July 6.
