Following a bout with bad weather Tuesday night, the District 7 Little League girls fastpitch softball tournament finally got underway with a doubleheader featuring the 11-12 year olds from various local counties.

The first game featured the All-Star teams from Wilkes and Avery counties. The Wilkes squad came away with a 12-0 win, capitalizing on 7 hits, 11 walks, and 6 errors. Winning pitcher Allison Parker helped her cause with a 2 run double in the 2nd inning. Wilkes used three pitcher in this game, Parker, Carrie Pennell, and Caitlyn Sheperd, who combined for no-hitter while striking out 10 of 12 batters.  For Avery County, pitcher Samantha Hoilman was credited with the loss, but also received assistance from Kesha Garland.
In the second game, the Watauga County All-Stars coached by Eddie Price, outlasted Ashe County 6-4. Watauga prevailed by producing nine hits, and taking advantage of four Ashe County errors. Nine different players produced for Watauga in the 12 girl lineup. Carson Hamrick (1), Kinsey Green(1),  Katie Hamrick (2), Abby Hicks (1), and Julia Parsons (1) all drove in runs. The winning pitcher was Jessica Isaacs who recorded nine strikeouts and gave up only 3 hits. Shortstop Sarah Houck was Ashe County's most productive hitter; she had a double. Ashe County got within a 5-4 thanks to some untimely errors by Watauga in the sixth inning. But an RBI single by Parson gave Watauga an insurance run.
All four teams continue in the double elimination tournament and return to the Avery County softball field on Friday. The two winners, Wilkes and Watauga, will square off at 5 pm in Newland.  The second game is an elimination game between Avery and Ashe at 7:30 pm. These games are free and open to the public.
