Cavaliers Eliminated From CWS, Gamecocks In Finals PDF Print

The University of Virginia was eliminated from the College World Series Friday night in Omaha, NE.

 

Defending South Carolina squeaked out a 3-2 win in 13 innings at TD Ameritrade Park. The Gamecocks (53-14) will play Florida (53-17) in a Southeastern Conference showdown in the CWS best the best of three championship series that begins Monday night.
The Gamecocks scored the winning run on a gift in the bottom of the 13th. Brady Thomas led things off with a single. Peter Mooney laid down a sacrifice bunt, but an errant throw by losing pitcher Cody Winiarski to second base allowed Thomas to reach safely.
Robert Beary then put down a sacrifice bunt and the pitcher's throw to third was errant and bounced into the camera well, allowing Thomas to come home with the winning run. Virginia left 15 men on base and hit into four double plays; South Carolina left 14 men on.
Thomas paced the Gamecocks offensively, going 2-6 with two RBI; Kenny Swab and Colin Harrington had two hits apiece for the Cavailers (56-12) in the loss.
Florida advanced Friday afternoon by knocking off Vanderbilt, 6-4.  A run-scoring single by Preston Tucker and a wild pitch with the bases loaded snapped a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning. It's Florida's first trip to the national finals since 2005 (theylost to Texas that season).
