The Watauga Junior American Legion A Team came up a litte short Friday night. The A Team (4-6 overall; 4-4 Northwestern Junior American Legion Division) dropped a double-header against the South Caldwell A Team in a battle featuring the top two teams in league play. South Caldwell scored the winning run on a wild pitch and defeated Watauga 3-2 in seven innings in game one; South blanked Watauga 3-0 in game two.
Taylor Shuford, who deserved a better fate, suffered the loss in the opener. He went seven innings, and struck out six.
"Taylor has really given us some big innings this summer," said A Team coach Bradley Rudisill said. "He gave us nine innings his last time out (a 2-1 win at Patton on Monday), and he was solid again tonight. It was tough to lose, but we had the top team in the division on the ropes."
Shuford also helped himself at the plate with a double and an RBI; Jake Cody, who had five hits in the two games combined, was 3-3 and drove in a run.
"It was frustrating for both coach (Jeff) Parham and myself," Rudisill said. "Both teams really blew some pretty good scoring chances. But considering that they're undefeated, I thought we gave them a good run."
Brian Bolster had a hit and Tyler Sturgill had two hits in game one. Shawn Buchheit went the distance (five innings) and took the loss in game two. Cody had two hits and Sturgill had a hit in the night cap.
The A Team returns home to play the Watauga B Team (1-7; 1-5 division play) at Pioneer Field Saturday at 5 pm.
