Child Critically Injured in Mower Accident PDF Print

A four-year old child was critically injured—maimed—in a tragic accident yesterday afternoon.  The frantic call came in just after 3:35 to a property on the Virginia State line to the Ashe Communications Center—that the four-year old had been run over by a mower operated by the child’s father.

During dispatches of first responders and Helton Ambulance Services, the dispatcher on the phone with the 9-1-1 caller could be heard giving instructions and trying to reassure that help was on its way in spite of the distance to the Shippy’s Branch Road home, just off NC 194 north.  A landing zone was set up for WINGS Air ambulance and the child was airlifted to the Johnson City Medical Center.  Ashe Sheriff James Williams reported that the child lost one leg, several toes off the other foot, and that the home turned out to be in Grayson County Virginia even though their 9-1-1 call was routed to Ashe.  A condition report was not available late yesterday.
