Lance Ware, who played college football at Appalachian State University, has been named the new head football coach at Shelby High School.

Ware replaces Chris Norman, who retired in May. Norman was 147-39-1 during his 13-year stay with the Golden Lions' program. He also won three state titles and 10 conference championships. Ware, who played at Shelby and was an all-conference tackle, has been with the Golden Lions for 14 years as an assistant coach. He was named Defensive Coordinator in 2005, and he helped the Golden Lions to three state championships and three state runner-up finishes.
Ware, a long snapper during his four-year college career, graduated from ASU in 1997. He becomes the fifth head coach in Shelby history in the past 75 years. Ware makes his head-coaching debut August 19, when the Golden Lions open the regular season at Kannapolis A.L. Brown.
