McMahon Joins Murray State PDF Print

Former Appalachian State assistant coach Matt McMahon is on the move again.

One year after leaving ASU to join Buzz Peterson at UNC-Wilmington, McMahon has been named an assistant coach at Murray State by head coach Steve Prohm. McMahon served 10 seasons as an assistant coach at ASU before moving he left for UNCW last season. He was ranked sixth on

Following a successful playing career at ASU, McMahon began his coaching career as an assistant coach on Houston Fancher's staff with the Mountaineers in 2000-01 season. McMahon moved to Tennessee to coach with Peterson in 2001-02 season as an administrative graduate
assistant before returning to ASU as an assistant coach in the spring
of 2002.
“I am thrilled with the opportunity to join Steve Prohm's coaching staff,” McMahon said. “His energy, passion, and overall vision for Murray State basketball are very impressive, and I am excited to be a part of it.”
As a player and assistant coach, McMahon was part of Appalachian State's greatest era and three of their four postseason appearances. The Mountaineers had 80 wins in four seasons from 2007-10. McMahon recruited Donald Sims who went on to be Southern Conference Player of
the Year in the 2008-09 season and finish as ASU's career scoring
The Racers were 31-5 in 2009-10 and 23-9 last season, winning the regular season championship in the Ohio Valley Conference and participating in the NIT. Prohm replaces Bill Kennedy, who left to become the new head coach at Texas A&M.
McMahon is also the second assistant coach to leave UNC-Wilmington. Kevin Norris left in April to become the associate head coach at Florida Gulf Coast.
