Women's Basketball Inks Three for 2011-12 PDF Print

Appalachian State University women’s basketball looks to build upon one of its best seasons in program history, as the 2011 regular season Southern Conference champions have inked three highly touted newcomers for the upcoming 2011-12 season, head coach Darcie Vincent announced Thursday.

 

The incoming class consists of two freshman and one junior college transfer, with the three hailing from Georgia, Virginia and Illinois.

 


 

Katie Mallow • 5-9 • Guard • Snellville, Ga. • Brookwood
Four-year letterwinner in basketball … three-year letterwinner in volleyball ... named all-County for basketball both her sophomore and junior seasons ... named to the Georgia all-Star team as a junior ... as a junior she broke the school record for the most three pointers in a single game (seven) ... averaged 20.1 points per game ... recorded an average of 2.3 steals per game ... hauled in an average of 3.3 rebounds per game ... as a junior she broke the school record for the most points scored by a junior (546) ... in 2010 was tabbed a Gwinnett County Super Six ...  was also named all-Region Player of the Year as a senior for volleyball ... played AAU for Peak Performance Elite under head coach Bruce Price ... squad finished 13th in AAU Nationals in 2007.

 

 


Coach Vincent on Katie :
“Katie comes to us with a variety of basketball experience. She is a true student of the game and her passion comes out every time she hits the floor. She is a very versatile guard that will be looked upon to fill a needed void at the scoring position.  Our coaching staff is excited to work with Katie, as she will do the nitty gritty and it done with pride and passion."

 


Maryah Sydnor • 6-1 • Guard/Forward • Radford, Va. • Radford
Four-year letterwinner in basketball … four-year letterwinner in volleyball ... one-year letterwinner in soccer ... named all-District in basketball her sophomore, junior and senior seasons ... picked up all-Region honors her junior and senior seasons ... named all-State as a senior ... named the District Player of the Year as both a junior and senior ... tabbed the Region Player of the Year as both a junior and senior ... named the State Player of the Year as a senior ... tabbed all-Timeland Player of the Year as a junior and senior ... totaled 2041 career points during her high school career ... as a senior she averaged 26.1 points per game and grabbed an average of 12 rebounds per contest ... earned all-District and all-Region honors in soccer as a freshman ... earned Volleyball all-District accolades as a sophomore, junior and senior ... named all-State in volleyball as a senior ... named volleyball District Player of the Year as a senior ... played AAU for Team Virginia under head coach Randy Dunton.

 

 

Coach Vincent on Maryah:
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Maryah.  Her championship mentality will be a true asset to our squad.  She is tremendously talented with the ability to score in a wide variety of ways.  Maryah, will offer some interesting match-ups with our opponents and will be tough to defend."

 

 

 

Raven Williams • 5-4 • Guard • Chicago, Ill. • Kishwaukee Junior College • John Marshall
Four-year letterwinner in basketball at John Marshall under head coach Dorothy Gaters ... high school team was 2007-08 3A State Champions ... Played two seasons at Kishwaukee Junior College ... is the Kishwaukee single season assist record holder (187) ... National Junior College Athletic Association and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association all-American nominee ... named to the Region IV all-Tournament team during the 2010-11 season ... tabbed first team Arrowhead all-Conference ... during the 2010-11 season was named the Region IV Player of the Week three times ... at the end of the 2010-11 season she ranked 35th in the NJCAA in free throw percentage (77%) ... ranked seventh in the NJCAA in assists per game (5.67) .... ranked 27th in the NJCAA in steals per game (3.03) ... during the 2009-10 season was tabbed all-Region IV second team ... named Region IV Player of the Week three times during the 2009-10 campaign ... picked to the Region IV all-Tournament team ... helped team to back-to-back 20 win seasons (2009-10 - 2010-11) ... led team to 2010-11 Arrowhead Conference title.

 

 

Coach Vincent on Raven:
"We are very excited to add some depth to our point guard position. Raven will give us immediate college experience and leadership. She is a point guard that thinks pass first and will be a tremendous asset to our transition game.  She has a terrific understanding of the game and we are excited to watch her grow in and develop in our system."

 

 

ASU will release its 2011-12 schedule later this summer.
