Mrs. Jean Jensen Wey, former first lady of Appalachian State University, died Tuesday, May 24. Mrs. Wey was married to the late Dr. Herbert W. Wey, Appalachian’s third president and first chancellor (1969-79). Like her late husband, Mrs. Wey was an advocate for education,
both in the public schools and here at the University. She earned a B. S. and M. A. in education from Appalachian and taught at Hardin Park Elementary School.
The contributions the Weys made to the growth of this institution are numerous, including establishing the University’s student teacher program, founding the College of Business and Watauga College, and revising the curriculum so that students could experiment with more elective courses.
Current and future alumni of Appalachian will continue to benefit from their work for years to come, Rosanne and I join the campus community in offering condolences to Mrs. Wey’s daughters – Buddie Udine Wetli of Miami, Florida, Linda Jean Leach and husband Ralph of Goldsboro, NC, Mary Jane Cruser and husband Roger of Peebles, Ohio, and Brenda Lee Wey and husband John Fillinger of Blowing Rock – and her grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family members.
A memorial service for Mrs. Wey will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jean J.
