The Watauga High baseball team concluded a successful 2011 campaign with six players being named to the Northwestern 3A/4A All-Conference team.
Max Linville, Ryan Turner, Jake Watts, Matt Proffitt, Ethan Greene and Josh Roberts were named all-conference. Pitcher Dylan Norris, the NW3A/4A Pitcher of the Year in 2010, was named Honorable Mention. South Caldwell, which won its first regular-season championship since 2008, had seven all-conference selections. The Spartans also captured player, pitcher and coach of the year honors.
Travis Cook was named the Player of the Year; Jacob Hatton was named Pitcher of the Year, and Jeff Parham was named coach of the Year. The Spartans, who lost to Mooresville in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs, finished the year at 21-4. The Pioneers, who defeated South Caldwell to win their first conference title in 11 years, and their third championship in school history, reached the Class 4A Western Quarterfinals before they were eliminiated May 20 by Porter Ridge 1-0 in Indian Trail.
The Pirates were eliminated Tuesday night. T.C. Roberson bested Porter Ridge 8-1 in the Western Semifinals in Asheville. The Rams (24-4), who eliminated Porter Ridge in the regional semifinals last season, will now play Southeast Guilford in the Western Finals (a best two of three series) beginning Thursday night. Southeast Guilford defeated Ardrey Kell 2-1 Tuesday night in Charlotte.
The Rams were lost to East Forsytn in the Western Finals last year. In Class 3A, South Point defeated Hickory 3-0 in the Western Semifinals. The Red Tornadoes (17-11) only had two hits. Winning pitcher Logan Waldon struck out 12; Tyler Poole, who suffered the loss, struck out 11. South Point (23-2) will now play Marvin Ridge in the Western Finals in Class 3A beginning Thursday night.
ALEXANDER CENTRAL ADVANCES
The Alexander Central High softball team marched its way into the Class 4A state semifinals with a 7-0 win over North Mecklenburg Tuesday night in Taylorsville.
The Cougars (27-1) were led by winning pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson, who scattered four hits and struck out 13. She also belted a three-run homer in the win. The Cougars will play Porter Ridge in the Western Semifinals Friday night in Indian Trail. The winner of that game will play either North Davidson, which won the 4A title last season, or Southwest Guilford in the opening round of that double-elimination tournament at Walnut Creek near Raleigh for the Western Regional championship on June 3.
Fred T. Foard advanced in Class 3A by knocking off Franklin 3-0 Tuesday night in 11 innings. Winning pitcher Lex Shubert had 20 strikeouts. It was also Franklin's (23-1) first loss of the season.
The Tigers (22-4) will play Crest (21-3) in the Western Semifinals on Friday. Crest advanced by knocking off Lawndale Burns 1-0 down in Shelby. If the Tigers win on Friday, they would earn their first trip to the state tournament since 1998---the last time they won a state championship.
