Sophomore Cody Penny, who played at South Caldwell  High School, has put together two productive seasons at the University of North Carolina.

 

Penny, a right-hander, has appeared in 21 games for the No17 Tar Heels this season. He’s 1-0 with five saves and a 5.74 earned-run-average. Penny has given up ten earned runs in 15 2/3 innings of work, with nine walks and 18 strikeouts.
Penny is second on the team in saves, and sixth in appearances. During his two-year stay with the program, Penny has made 29 appearances, he’s 2-0 and in 24 2/3 innings, he’s given up 14 earned runs on 24 hits. He’s walked 17 with 28 strikeouts. He has a 4.05 ERA.
Penny made eight appearances as a true freshman in 2010, including two in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He also threw a career high three innings with a career-best four strikeouts during his freshman year against Winthrop in a non-conference game.
Penny was an All-Northwestern Conference selection, and a member of South Caldwell’s 2007 state championship team that featured current San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner. Penny was 15-4 during his junior and senior years combined, and he was named the co-MVP in the NW4A Conference tournament in 2008.
