![]() Yes, that was the scenario for Watauga High Athletics Director Tom Wright Monday morning as he was caught in a maze of musical chairs, thankis to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
At first, the WHS softball team, which begins post-season play Tuesday at home, was told it would play West Mecklenburg, but the Hawks opted out of the playoffs because they only had nine players on their team. So, the envelope was passed on to A.C. Reynolds about 30 minutes later as the NCHSAA came up with a new bracket. Unfortunately, approximately 45 minutes after that, the Rockets were dropped from the playoffs replaced by South Caldwelll (10-11), which now makes its way to Boone to play the Pioneers (9-12) Tuesday night at 6 pm at the Sports Complex in the Class 4A playoff opener for both teams. The Pioneers, who haven't won a state playoff game since 2008 (and the only one they've ever won at the fast-pitch level) swept the Spartans during the regular season.
