Jay Canty, a 6-foot-6 rising sophomore, is leaving Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH, and transferring to Appalachian State University.

Canty, who is from Jamestown, NC, played his high school basketball at Ragsdale High School and he later played at Oak Ridge Military Academy in Oak Ridge, NC. His coach at Oak Ridge, Stan Kowalewski made the announcement on Tuesday.
According to Kowalewski, Canty is very comfortable with the coaching staff at ASU and their style of play. Canty wants to play for a Division I program that better suits his skills, and he feels ASU is the perfect fit.
Canty appeared in 17 games for the Musketeers last season. He averaged 1.5 points-per-game, 0.8 rebounds-per-game in 7.4 minutes-per-game. Canty will have to sit out a year, per NCAA transfer rules. He will not be eligible until the 2012-13 season.
