The Watauga High men's tennis team hardly broke a sweat in defeating Davie County at the Sports Complex on Thursday.

The Pioneers disposed of the War Eagles, the No.2 seed from the Central Piedmont 4A Conference, 9-0 in the opening round of the dual-team state playoffs. WHS (16-4) will now play Ardrey Kell,. the No.2 seed from the Southwestern 4A Conference, at home next Tuesday.
Steve Lake, Michael Smith,  Harrison Battle, Landon Taylor, Chris Ludwig and Patrick O'Neal were all victorious in singles play. Lake and Smith picked up a win in No.1 doubles; Battle and Taylor both won at No.2, and Ludwig and O'Neal were successful at No.3 doubles.
The Class 4A Western Regional begins Friday at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte. The Pioneers will be represented by Patrick O'Neal (Northwestern 3A/4A Conference champion in singles) and Chris Ludwig in singles play. Steve Lake and Michael Smith (NW3A/4A doubles champions), Harrison Battle and Landon Taylor will compete in doubles play. The top four finishers in singles and doubles play will advance to the state finals next weekend, May 13-14. Regional play begins at 2 pm Friday afternoon.

The Watauga High softball team suffered a disappointing loss on Senior Night at the Sports Complex on Thursday.
The Pioneers (7-11) made three costly errors in the third inning, handing Freedom a 7-5 win. That meltdown ignited a five-run explosion by the Patriots. Freediom, which defeated WHS in an 11-inning game back on March 8, only made two hits in the frame. The big blow was a run-scoring double by Paula Davis.
Riley Pudney backboned WHS in the losing cause. Pudney had three hits (a triple to lead-off the Pioneers' first inning and a double), she drove in a run and scored three runs. Taylor Drummnonds and Shelby Drummonds each had an RBI.
The Pioneers travel to South Caldwell Friday night. It's a must-win game for WHS. The Pioneers, who defeated South Caldwell (in Boone on April 4), must win Friday night  to nail down the No.2 seed and the final playoff spot in th Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. The NW3A/4A Conference tournament begins Tuesday, May 10. The semifinals and finals will be played at Alexander Central in Taylorsville, May 12-13. The state playoffs begin Tuesday, May 17.

Seniors Shelby Drummonds, Tori Wright and Caroline Yates were honored before the game.
