The Watauga Community Band, under the baton of Bill Winkler, takes to the Rosen Concert Hall stage at ASU for a 3pm concert that will feature a new work by a Boone composer. Rosen is next to Farthing Auditorium on River Street in Boone with plenty of parking in front.  Dr. Dawn Perry, ASU Alum and the Director of Bands at Wingate University, will join Mr. Winkler on the podium as guest conductor for the Steven Reineke composition, “Pilatus, Mountain of Dragons.” The piece musically describes the Swiss legend of a band of adventurers who climb Mount Pilatus in search of a dragon. After ascending the mountain, all but one are slain by the dragon, who ultimately spares the life of the sole survivor, thereby planting the seeds of compassion and tolerance in the hearts of man.

A new composition by Dr. George Naff will highlight the concert.  Dr. Naff enjoyed success as a high school and University level band director, most recently as Director of the Duke Wind Symphony. He is frequently invited to serve as a guest clinician for various honors and all-state bands and is often found serving as an adjudicator for music festivals. “Love Song”, his most recent work for band, is based on a song he composed in the past and is dedicated to “Bill Winkler and the Watauga Community Band.” Dr. Naff resides in Boone with his wife Susan, where he serves as the Director of Congregational Care at Boone United Methodist Church.

The program will also include:

The Hounds of Spring, by Alfred Reed, arranged by Robert Longfield,

Legend of the Queen Anne's Revenge, by Robert W. Smith

Tiptoe Through the Tubas, by Joe Burke, arranged by Jerry Brubaker

Gershwin, A Medley, arranged by Robert Russell Bennet
