Union Pines High School worked its way into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association record book with a thunderous home run barrage on Wednesday night.Union Pines slammed 11 home runs to set a single game team record as the Vikings defeated East Montgomery 16-9 in a game at Viking Field at Union Pines.
The 11 home runs eclipsed the previous record of nine, jointly held by East Wake from a 1983 win over Apex and Richmond Senior in a 1987 triumph over West Robeson. In addition, East Montgomery homered twice for a combined total of 13 in the game. The previous NCHSAA record for two teams was 10, with Athens Drive hitting eight and Apex two in an 18-17 slugfest won by Athens Drive on April 24, 2003.
Four different Union Pines players had multiple homers in the game, and seven of 11 homers by the Vikings were solo shots. Nic Collins and Justin Allred each had three home runs for Union Pines, while Seth Breasseale and Gabe Gonzalez each two. Allred and Collins each had five runs batted in. Carson Kelly also had a homer for the Vikings. Matthew Reynolds and Trevor Wilson hit home runs for East Montgomery.
The 11 home runs by the Vikings shattered the Union Pines school record of six, which was established just over a week ago in a 17-2 victory over Overhills.
