On the strength of striking out 10 in eight innings of Appalachian State University baseball's 3-1 win over Wofford on Friday, ASU's Ryan Arrowood (Rutherfordton, N.C./Central) has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the SoCon office announced on Monday. With a wind-chill factor in the mid-20s and light snow falling throughout the game, Arrowood limited Wofford to six hits and issued only one walk. His 10 strikeouts and eight innings pitched matched career highs set in his previous start versus Cornell (March 24) as he became the first Mountaineer since the turn of the millennium to record double-digit strikeouts in back-to-back outings.
The right-handed junior upped his record to 4-1 on the season while his ERA dipped to 2.95. The victory set the tone for Appalachian's three-game series sweep over Wofford.
The recognition is the first of Arrowood's career and the second for a Mountaineer this season. Freshman southpaw Lawrence Pardo was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week following his win over No. 20 Miami (Fla.) on Feb. 25.
Appalachian (15-13, 4-8 SoCon) hosts North Carolina A&T on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium and travels to East Tennessee State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Arrowood returns to the mound on Friday when ASU opens a three-game SoCon set at Furman with first pitch set for 7 p.m. at FU's Latham Stadium.
